Basic features of Persian carpet

There is hardly anyone who does not wish to own a Persian carpet. Genuine Persian carpets are made in ancient Persia area, and although many nations have made attempts to imitate Persian carpets, they have not succeeded in creating the quality and rich designs that the original carpets are known for. How do you recognize an original Persian carpet? There are several typical features of a Persian carpet set it apart from the rest and that helps you choose a genuine carpet:

• If you have a keen eye, then the visual uniqueness of the Persian carpet will speak for itself. The main design theme of the carpet is a determining factor. This could be either a revolving curve form or, or a form based on revolving broken direct lines. Persian carpets made in cities generally feature curvy flower patterns, village carpets might feature both curvature and geometric designs, and the tribal carpets largely come in geometric designs. Popular Persian rug designs are known by different Persian names, such as Lachack Toranj or Triangular Citron, Mehrabi or Altar, Goldani or Vase, Shah Abbas, and Arabesque.

• Quality is another prominent feature of genuine Persian carpets. They are only made of natural wool such as Kurkwool, silk, gold and/or silver threads. Genuine Persian carpets seldom use synthetic materials.

• Even the colors used in the making of a genuine Persian carpet are natural – they are usually vegetable dyes. The weavers use colors that are extracted from local plants that grow in the mountains.

• Another feature exclusive to genuine Persian carpets is that these carpets are never machine-made. They are only woven by hand, and only by independent weavers.

• The foundation and the number of knots per area also factor into the quality of a Persian carpet. The foundation used in a genuine Persian carpet is silk or cotton-based, and a high number of knots per square inch indicates superior quality of the Persian carpet.

• Last but not the least, the price of a Persian carpet reflects on its quality. The overall quality, texture, age, size, color, material and knot density all help determine the price of a geniune Persian carpet, which, although it’s not cheap, is well worth the initial investment.
