• Handmade: Remember that if you are looking for an authentic Persian rug then it needs to be made in one of ancient Persia areas or by traditional weaver. Independent weavers design the authentic handmade rugs, and also note that the rugs are usually made of natural silk and wool.
• Unique Design: A genuine Persian rug will be unique in design. Never will you get to see two rugs with identical designs, and the fact that each rug is a product of an independent weaver means that sets the design apart from that of any other rug. Most Persian rugs will have either cotton or silk foundations. Persian rugs with silk foundations are more expensive.

Rugs made in each type of area are completely different in terms of design and quality. There are basically two kinds of Persian rugs based on place of weaving: Those made in larger cities and those made in tribal areas. Some well-known names of city and tribal rugs are Tabriz, Nain, Mud, Meshkin, Bidjar, Kirman and Qom etc.
• Difference between city and tribal Persian rugs: Normally city rugs are of superior quality, and they are most often used as decorative pieces. Tribal rugs are of lower quality and are mostly used for utilitarian purposes.
• Terminologies: When buying a Persian rug you also need to be familiar with terms such as KPSI, which means knots per square inch. In general, the higher the KPSI the higher the quality of the rug. A KPSI of 250+ indicates superior quality, and anything below 150 kpsi is considered to be of inferior quality. You also need to know terms such as Kurkwool, which is a finer wool removed from the rest of the wool, Abrisham, meaning “silk” and Alloh, which means “luxurious” in the Persian language.
